Kobe Steel Joins the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)

Kobe Steel, Ltd. signed the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and was registered as a participant company in March 2021.

The UNGC is a global framework for achieving sustainable growth under which companies and organizations demonstrate responsible and creative leadership and act as good members of society. The companies and organizations that sign the UNGC are committed to the ten principles (as provided below) for the protection of human rights, elimination of unfair labor, conservation of the environment and prevention of corruption.

The Kobe Steel Group (also known as the KOBELCO Group) established a new corporate philosophy in May 2020. Under the framework of sustainability management based on the Group's Corporate Philosophy, we will contribute to solving social issues by creating new value through our technologies, products, and services and fulfill various social responsibilities required of companies for further enhancement of corporate value. Recognizing our company's efforts are in line with the UNGC's initiatives, we decided to join the UNGC.

The KOBELCO Group will continue to promote sustainability management and strive to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through our business activities.

The Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact

Human Rights Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
Labor Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor;
Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labor; and
Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
Environment Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
Anti-Corruption Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
